Portrait photographers in Chicago serve as visual historians for the melting pot within the melting pot that is the USA. My grandparents left Puerto Rico in the 1950s to raise their family in New York, eventually moving to Chicago. I made this portrait of my grandma while visiting her in Puerto Rico, where she and my grandfather returned after their children were grown.

I love this picture of my mother. I love mom’s rich Taino Indian mix with African look. Mom has no European (Spanish) blood in her. It is so obvious. Many people tell me I don’t look like my mom. But at times when I look in the mirror I see Dona Julia.
Mom just has a third grade level education, but her knowledge of botany (self-taught) is unbelievable. She cultivates approximately 70 different types of plants including cacti. Herbs and medicinal also are included in her precious tropical garden in the mountains of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico.
I think you truly captured the essence of my old lady in this splendid picture.
I love how the lucious green isnt drowning her in the photo, but yet still holds a tremendous place in the picture. I wonder how this photo would look like in 3D…
